Your insurance may only cover you third party when abroad
This happened to me in 2005 and a post on MHF reminded me of this, I have fully comprehensive insurance and added european cover. I found out when I was in France that it only covered me third party.
Luckily a quick phone call and a small fee got me back up to full cover immediately. It is worth checking your policy for this.
